Napoleon Dynamite is a cult classic, and if you ever tell anyone you are from Idaho there are two things you will likely discuss- potatoes, and Napoleon Dynamite. The movie takes place in Preston Idaho, and the town is used for filming.
Addresses for filming sites-
**People still live in these houses, and while they are aware that they live in a home used in the filming of Napoleon Dynamite and are generally kind to people seeing the sites, please be courteous and respectful of their homes and property.
Big J’s Burgers –
196 N. State St, Preston, ID 83263
The original building where they filmed is no longer used, but the company is still the same! Their food is delicious, my favorite thing they offer is their ice cream. They use fresh fruit in all of their shakes. Our favorite was a banana and Reeses’ cup shake, but we also tried the banana split which was so much fun!
Rex Kwon Do –
2 N State St Ste. 235, Preston, ID 83263
This building is no longer set up the same as it was when the movie was filmed. It is now used as an office for a local business, Thorasdatter Design. You can still stop by, but the dojo is no more.
Deseret Industries Thrift Store & Donation Center –
36 S. State St, Preston, ID 83263
This site hasn’t changed much. They have moved some of their displays around a bit, but the “D.I.” is a staple thrift store throughout Idaho and Utah, and this store is similar to all the others.
Pop’n Pins Bowling-
411 US-91, Preston, ID 83263
We didn’t stick around to bowl , which I regret. But this is where Napoleon’s brother Kip and Uncle Rico discuss their business plan over a round of bowling.
Tetherball Court-
525 S. 4th St E, Preston, ID 83263
Some say that the tetherball court is gone, but that isn’t true. It is still there, you just have to pass the Headstart building and go back to the playground area. That being said, you won’t be able to access this stop if you go during school hours as it is on the elementary school grounds. Also, they don’t leave a tetherball up, so if you are set on experiencing this you will need to bring your own.
Preston High School –
151 E. 2nd S, Preston, ID 83263
Many scenes were filmed at the high school, but most were in front of the main doors. This is also where you can snag a pic of their sign that is shown in the movie. Again, this is a school that is still in use, so be aware of school hours before visiting.
Pedro Sanchez’s House –
59 S. 2nd St E, Preston, ID 83263
This is where Napoleon and Pedro take Pedro’s sledgehammer bike off a “sweet jump.” In Napoleon’s word’s, Pedro’s bike has “shocks, pegs, LUCKY!” This house is privately owned. Be respectful to the occupants.
Napoleon Dynamite’s House-
1447 E. 800 N, Preston, ID 83263
This home is not in the main area of Preston, but it’s only a five to ten minute drive out. This is where we see Napoleon wait for the bus, feed Tina, yell at Uncle Rico, and more! The fence that held Tina the llama is no longer there, but the house still looks similar. Again, this is someone’s home so please be respectful of their property and space! Do not wander onto their property.
Lamont Reservoir-
We didn’t get to stop at this one due to flooding in the area from the melting snow, but this is the spot where Kip and LaFawnduh get married in the post credits scene. It’s a nice place to stop and take a break, stretch your legs, and have a picnic. Lamont Reservoir is 84 acres and has multiple points of entry, so there’s no one address for this stop. I suggest searching “Lamont Reservoir” in your preferred maps app, or grab a physical map before you head up just in case you lose service.
Trisha Stevens’ House-
253 S. 2600 E, Preston, ID 83263
Where Napoleon brings the picture of Trisha that he drew for her in hopes of asking her to the dance. The infamous photo that Napoleon describes by saying, “It took me like three hours to finish the shading on your upper lip.” People do live here so stay off of their property and be respectful of their space.
These last two stops are closer to the town of Franklin and will take longer to drive to-
Summer Wheatley’s House-
3384 S Parkinson Rd, Preston, ID
We see this house when Uncle Rico stops by to leave his flier for breast enhancement supplements for Summer’s mom. This house is occupied. Be aware to not enter the property and be respectful to the owners.
Egg Farm-
3643 South 4000 East, Franklin
After Uncle Rico makes fun of Napoleon for not having a job, Napoleon works at an egg farm for the day. Between the farmers, chickens, and questionable lunch, Napoleon only walks away with $6 and all the eggs he can eat. This is a working farm and private property. Be aware not to wander and respect the owners and workers.
Napoleon Dynamite is a movie that just hits different when you grew up in a small town in Idaho. From seeing a farmer kill a cow, to the lag in fashion trends, it feels all too familiar. Taking some time to visit the town and relive the moments is a must for any fan of the movie.
P.S. Did you see my post about what I would have done differently when visiting the Napoleon Dynamite sites? Check it out HERE.
